Our personalised guide service is a project we’ve been working on for quite a lot of months and it is now finally live on our new website.
To explain what it is and how it works, it's easiest to start in Italy:
A couple of years ago, before we started doing Mad About Copenhagen together, Hazel and I went to Rome for a weekend. We just wanted to eat loads of great food and have a good time and be quite spontaneous about it. It’s Rome, what could possibly go wrong?!
There was this one evening where we were wandering around feeling hungry and literally not having a clue where to go and eat. We tried to find this restaurant that I remembered from my childhood, walking down every single side-street until we thought we found the one. We went in and had the most average dish of pasta ever - in Rome! All our plans to go out and meet sexy Italian men were forgotten. We walked back to our hotel early feeling sad that we’d wasted our money and one of our precious meals on shitty pasta.
It wasn’t until about a year later when the three of us were doing Mad About Copenhagen together, and we were in a phase where we had loads of ideas and were trying out different projects. Besides that, we found ourselves spending a lot of time replying to people who would email us asking stuff like “hey, love your feed, lot’s of good recommendations, but you just maybe just give me a personal recommendation of where to visit when I’m in Copenhagen” or it would be locals writing asking “where’s the perfect place to go on a first date” or “where’s the best carbonara” - stuff like that. It became really clear from the amount of emails we got, that people wanted us to tell them exactly where to go.
We took this back to our experience in Rome where we had had this ultimate pasta depression. We realised that in Copenhagen we were actually in a position where we could solve this problem for others, because we do spend all of our time on restaurants and eating out and immersing ourselves in that.
(To be clear, it is definitely not a first-world problem that we are proposing to solve here – it’s for all of you who get depressed after having a bad plate of pasta.)
Once we realised, that we may be the perfect guys to solve this problem in Copenhagen, we started figuring out how to best go about this. Initially, we had ideas of developing an app or something that would help people navigate our Instagram content, so we looked into that for a while. But no matter how much we organised our content, people would still have to do the work themselves – they would still have to browse and choose for themselves – which wine bar they wanted to go to, without really knowing much about any of them.
So, then we went a bit more old-school. We looked at some of the requests we were getting and the answers we were giving, and we came up a new service, that doesn't already exist, but is probably most closely related to the classic concierge service of hotels back in the day, when your concierge would get to know you and would send you out.
It is not about dictating what people do, but enabling the inner explorer within everyone and enabling people to still be spontaneous but organised enough that they won’t end up with a bad experience.
You can get us to design you any kind of guide to foodie things in Copenhagen - depending on who you are and what you want. Whether you’re on a mission to eat the best carbonara in the city, or the best restaurants in Amager, or just want to have a weekend of foodie fun all over the place.
If you want to try it out, you can go to our homepage - which we’ve recently redesigned, click “get your guide” and then you are asked a bunch of questions about who you are and what you’re looking for. When you’re done answering those, you pay us some money, we get an alert, and we start a bit of an email conversation with you - maybe to check some details, or dig deeper into whatever it is you’re looking for. Then we sit down together, with a blank sheet of paper, and design your guide for you, from scratch. You’d get it delivered as a beautiful .pdf in your inbox within 48 hours.
We'd love your feedback. Would you order a personalised guide, for yourself, or for someone else? Let us know!
